Yep. Emperor Norton notes.

The little Whitman "Lets Collect Paper Money" booklet I was given as a child in the 1970s mentions these notes as an example of the kinds of "odd and curious" things a paper money collector might encounter. As I recall the story from the booklet, the fellow's friends accepted his notes out of pity.

If any of the descendants of those friends still have their Emperor Norton notes and kept them in good condition, they may be sitting on a small fortune.

The Wikipedia page makes for interesting reading. The funniest part to me is that he got the census taker to list his occupation as Emperor.
