Here's a coin that arrived today! I'm really happy with the detail of Herakles. The coin came described as: Macedonia, Alexander III 336-323 BC AE17, 5.67 gr Sear 6739 It's also described elsewhere as four chalkoi or hemiobol. Since it's a Gorytos type, it may be minted in western Asia Minor, possibly an Alexander III lifetime issue. M.J. Price 322, Müller 1699. Compared to the seller's pic, the coin arrived with more detail. Edited by DVCollector 04/26/2012 10:32 pm

Interesting how photography can emphasise different things. Your pictures are better than the seller's.
Although they are obviusly the same coin, the obverse in the seller's picture seems to have less relief.

You're right--lighting can really affect the photograph. I took pics in both daylight and halogen. The halogen brought out more relief and detail. From the seller's pic, I had no doubts about the portrait--but I'm pleased the reverse inscription is more complete.

Very nice I'm sure that's a bow and quiver on the reverse, but I can't stop seeing a saw

Quote: I'm sure that's a bow and quiver on the reverse Thanks! It's a gorytos, which is a type of quiver for a short bow. Here is another type showing a standard quiver (not my coin)

The seller's picture suggests more green in the patina than yours. Which is correct? Sometimes the lighting angle that shows detail makes color harder to hold.

Quote: The seller's picture suggests more green in the patina than yours. Which is correct? Both may be correct, depending on the lighting. My last photo was shot in bright overcast and is true to the light; if I shot in the afternoon w/blue sky and yellower sunlight, it might look as green as the seller's pic.

Beautiful coin DVC! Once again, when I see some of the Greeks that you and Steve bring to the forum, I just want to find a way to bank roll a beauty like yours. BTW, Snohomish is a very nice area in it's own right, quick trip up Hwy 2 to Steven's pass. Excellent view of Baker!

Thanks Oxos! I'd like to add that I didn't spend much for this coin ($45), but it took several weeks of searching to find this one--and hoping it looked better in-hand than the seller's pictures--patience pays off sometimes.

That's a great score DVC! Even I could afford that. I think it is the patience thing that I lack though :)
