So after browsing on ebay for hours on end over the past couple weeks I found two coins that I liked a lot and were at a fair price and decided to pull the trigger on them. They came in the mail earlier today and I just wanted to share them with everyone. Being in my American History collecting mood I did also add a Jamestown commem not pictured here as well. I must say I was plesently surprised by how the 1921 Pilgrim looked and am not sure the picture does it justice. I know not everyone is a fan of resubmitts but I am very tempted to resubmit that one or submit it to the plus service. And yes I know commems has me beat for an impressive collection in this area

You have an absolutely wonderful pair of commemoratives there basebal21 -- I like your eye! Those are a pair that would fit very comfortably in any high-end commem set. I especially like the Pilgrim -- I've always liked flashy Pilgrims -- and is just the type of coin I'm looking for as an upgrade. Good thing I haven't been looking on ebay for one! Congratulations on the purchases! Hopefully, they're only the first of many that you will share with us! Good luck with the continued hunt! You're building something special!

commems I actually wondered if while I was exchanging offers on the coins if you were going to swoop in and snag the coins But thank you for the kind words, I hope to one day get a complete set of the classic ones. I might do the same for the modern since I like the vast majority of them anyway getting a couple that I dont really like for a complete set doesn't seem so bad. Ive actually been a little surprised at some of the quality of the coins on ebay if you look around enough, some of it is luck with who has their posted at the time, but I must admit I'm very happy with my purchases there so far.

Lovely coins and a great addition indeed to your growing commemorative set.
I enjoy both of them ... and suggest that the only competition here is with ourselves as we strive to build the best sets we can within our knowledge base and resources.
Congratulation on the purchases ... hoping they inspire you to dig deeper into the classic silver set.

Nickel thank you for the kind words. I must say the more that I get the more addicting it becomes. The hardest part is not pulling the trigger on every coin all at once and being patient to find the right ones. I'm certainly hooked on the classic silver at this point hoping one day to have a full set of them all.
Gettysburg, Antietam, and Stone Mountain are my current targets because of the civil war buff in me, but sadly have been unable to find the right one. Stone Mountain seems to be particularly difficult to even find for sale much less with the eye appeal I am hoping for.

I salute your patience and knowledge of your personal needs ... truly ... the best advise I could offer to any newer enthusiast of the series is as follows ... Decide up-front the standards that you wish to achieve for the set ... consider the variables ... technical grade, eye appeal, toning, TPG slabs and price. Appears from your initial selections and remarks about eye-appeal that you are well on your way towards avoiding all the mistakes I made. Truly looking forward to seeing all the new additions to your set ... and I stand prepared to offer any help I can as you strive to work on it. David

Nickel I couldnt have said it better myself. I did make many of those mistakes you speak of when I first started but luckily that was with the modern commems so they werent as costly.
While I am not opposed to upgrading any of them in the right situation or in the future if my financial means have improved I know most of the very top grades are way out of reach.
At the moment I am focused on finding that high end coin with the great eye appeal at the level just below where they usually see the big price jump. And of course would prefer coins that would appear to be at the upper end of their grade.
Some coins like the Elkin I think toning can really add to the beauty of it for example in that coin I can picture settlers standing around at dusk for protection where others I would rather keep to a minimum.
I guess my basic concern with selections are I dont want anything to appear out of place in the sense that when you look at the collection I dont want to have a "dud" so to speak and would like to avoid purchasing the same coin over and over again at small upgrades if that makes any sense.
Now only if I could have known about this forum when I first started.......
I did just find out my local community center is having a coin show tomorrow which is very exciting and depending on what they have may have some more to share.

Right now quite a few. I started out with the modern commens so I'm closer to finishing up that half than the classic, but my goal is one day to complete both

That's a great pair!! (I'm talking coins here!)... The Early Commemoratives are numismatic crack! I am speaking from experience. The coins' beauty, diversity and intrigue all add to their Siren-esque appeal. Well done on these gorgeous examples and keep it going!

Thank you every one for the kind words. I had mostly been a modern collector until I came across commems threads so I have to give the credit for getting me fully into this series. I am now completely hooked and look forward to sharing it along with all of you as well as seeing the amazing collections you guys have been posting as well
