With Iovi Conser types (like those of Aurelian) with Jupiter and the emperor, why do some descriptions say "emperor standing right", when he is clearly the figure on the left side of the reverse, and Jupiter is on the right?

Or is it describing the way they are facing, like "emperor standing [and looking to the] right"?

I suspect you're correct--I have coins attributed "Athena right", "Zeus right", etc. that are clearly the direction they're facing.

Yep, I suspect you're right, Valiant. Any that I've seen pictured always seem to be facing the direction that they're attributed with. Sometimes you have to watch, though, because confusion can occur if the figure in question is looking over his/her shoulder, as is often the case on roman coins. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's the direction the body is facing, not the way the head is facing.

On some coins, not only is the direction of the body facing described, but also which direction the head is facing.

Thanks, Gil-galad. I've just checked through some reference material and found that you are quite correct.
