I have that scope and got it for just under $60usd a few years ago. They have a newer model now and it is cheaper. I got mine on e-Bay but I am not very happy with it. The lighting is a pain in the you know what. I had to cover all but one led and that one has a paper filter on it to cut down the glare. There is also no white balance to adjust so getting a good color shot is hard. I do not recommend this scope. John1

hi John1
Sorry to hear you are not happy with the scope, and yes the lighting is not the best, but at least you should be about to use a program on your Windows machine to adjust the lighting, or a program after the picture has been taken.

I have been looking and saw where some are 800X - with a catch - the scope itslef only goes up to 200 and the rest is software. When I see "hidden" info like this I tend to back off of that brand. However, this sort of others me b/c I thought I truly could get 800X. Why would I want it? Why not!? If the tech is there to take a pic this close, then it would be simple to make dead sure on repunched MMs etc. I also would like to see the scopes be able to take at least a 5mp pic so you could zoom in more. At present I only have a Kodak Easyshare, but since it is 7mp, I can zoom the pic in my graphics program for the details I want. But I would love if I could just plug in the scope and have this level of detail without having to set it up, snap a pic, and then use a program to zoom in. Quote: Hey, are you making me dig up my old Telephone glass isolators... I like the rainbow of color the shelves of them throw into the room as the sun rises in back of them - its like stained glass but with some great history (also one of the reasons I like coins - the history).

Earle42, you don't need a 800x for coins. Anything more then 150x is a waste,IMHO. wert,I do use a photo fixer most of the time. But you can only fix a photo so much. John1

John1 is right Earle42. You don't need a 800x to do a good job...This is mine below in the picture.

Here is what I can currently do with my current 7MP Kodak Easyshare and a homemade zoom lens (binocular lens and made a PVC fitting - works great!): B/c it is 7MP, I can zoom in to get this close. I believe if it was possible, and they put a 7MP camera in one of these USB microscopes, it would be possible to get a lot closer. Why would I want to? Recently I got a 32D quarter that I thought had a questionable mint mark on the reverse - I put it under my stereoscope and, at 400X, I could see the base of the D was not glued/soldered on. If I had this kind of magnification in a USB microscope, it would be a lot easier to do this kind of thing. A USB scope would also be easier than setting up the tripod, etc. for the camera. So how does the above pic compare to how close your USB scopes can do? Will your 200X get in closer?

Hi Earle42You are absolutely correct.. 1 - You have a 7.0 mega pixel and my USB is inly 2 mega pixel. 2 - For speed the USB is the way to go. But, you get a BETTER picture by far, more than I can get. You are correct sir. Below is about my limit, good, but not excellent.

Thanks for the pic wert. I agree with you that for speed, the USB is definitely the way to go. That is one reason I was looking at a USB scope. It takes me awhile to get the camera setup JUST right. Then I need to take multiple pics b/c, even though on a tripod and trying as carefully as I can to press the button to take the pic, I end up with as many out of focus pics as I do good ones. Then there are the lighting issues to contend with.
I might try to find a way to make a static setup to just screw my camera onto and leave it sitting on a desk for now. I have a feeling that maybe by next Christmas they might have new USB scope models out with the ability to get closer. It will make me have to put up with the current, cimbersome system I have, but I can be patient.
I know for dead sure that if I bought one right now that the updates would be out next week (I did this with the Cherry Pickers guides - paid 85.00 for both and the new ones were out in 2 months or so!).
Thanks for all the info - this has helped me greatly.
