It could be "horn silver"--silver chloride.

Those are maybe the worst of the couple hundred silvers that I've dug in the last 2 or 3 years, and these have all been cleaned in some manner. The Morgan was dug from the picnic area of a church that burned down about 1900. She came out iron-colored and I thought that she was counterfeit at first. Same with the seated that came from a ballfield next to an old train depot. My second dug seated, what a heartbreaker! The Peace dollar, holed, I dug at about 5" inches between an old concession stand and ball diamond.

And it seems that some of those are even part of the collection. In my system I keep all the ugly ones before I get a better examples of them. So at the moment there are a couple of horribles in my binders...
