I've been creating hobo nickels for a while and I'm now trying to complete a "set" of hobo nickels. I'm about one-third of the way through, and I have most of the coins I need. I've already gotten some help from some forum members hunting down cheap, ugly coins that I can carve up. For the pricey ones, I intend to find nic-a-dated coins. (If Capt Wifo can find a whole set of Buffalo nickels for the cost of a Dansco, why can't I?) Here are photos of my progress starting with the late dates and working up.

36-S: Frankenstein's Monster 36-D: Jockey - and the reverse is a horse. The reverse of all of these are stamped DAV, here it's worked into the horse's blanket 36: "The Artist" This is one of my favorites... based on a fellow that came into the shop one day. Neat hat, nice beard...

35-S: The Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz (get it? "S" for scarecrow!) 35-D: The Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz 35: The Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz (notice these are all 1935 coins... a nice set of 3) 34-D: Davy Crockett in his coonskin cap. I've always thought this was a unique design that fits the nickel well.

29-S: Johnny Appleseed... This one seemed much better in my mind. Meh. 29-D: Navy Sailor 29: Explorer in a pith helmet 28-S: Conquistador... I'm very happy with this one. The detail in the helmet and the ruff on his neck came out very well.

Right now, I've got these stored in a Dansco. I plan to put them in a Capital Holder Buffalo nickel display. The Capital Holder does not have slots for the 3-legger or the 18/17 which is perfect for me and this project. It does have a space for the 38 D/S, but those can be found cheap. I may just display a reverse in that slot. Regardless, that's a long way off. If you've got some nic-a-dated nickels out there, these are the ones I still need... 26-D 26-S 21-S 24-S 17-S 15-S 15 14-S 13-S T2 13-S T1 13-D T1

First, want to say that I'm impressed with your collection. I've never seen Hobo-nickels before, but I can tell nice work when I see it. What does nic-a-dated mean?

Thanks for your comments. There are some other threads around here about hobo nickels. Mine aren't the best, but I'm happy with (most of) them. nic-a-date is an acid solution that brings out the date in dateless nickels by eating away some of the surfaces. It damages the nickel (but, hey, it was dateless before) so the treated nickel doesn't have much collector value. So it is a way some people fill the very expensive holes in their Buffalo nickel sets.

These are great! With your practiced skills, don't short change yourself by carving only ugly and nic-o-dates... the hobos carved on higher grades are worth a premium!

Those are some nice lookin hobos. I had some worn out Canadian large cents and some silver coins and always liked the look of love tokens so I bought some gravers and started making my own. Looking at your collection, I may just have to go through my junk coins, find some buffalo's and get started on my own set.
