Hi all, I'm looking forward to your thoughts about my query. In 2004 my RAM uncirc set was missing a five cent coin. I thought this was rare, but I also have a 2008 set missing a five cent coin. Would these sets be worth anything as a collector item? Obviously, they aren't standard issue, but at the same time, they technically aren't mint errors either. Any thoughts about whether they are worth something - or have I just been dudded - twice now? Thanks, M

I have seen these on ebay being passed off as an error...
IMHO it is post mint tampering... If you are very careful, you can split the cardboard just enough to slip one of the coins out (5c easiest as it is small and thin) and then a small dob of glue and hey presto! I know cause I did it just to see if it could be done :-)
I am not saying that yours are not genuine, just that I know that this "error" can be faked...

Hi, I bought the 2004 directly from the RAM (via an internet order), and the 2008 set was a recent purchase from a reputable coin dealer via his website.

Sounds geniune then

Perhaps have a feel to see if 5c coin have slipped out of there hole and gone into the gaps

Just a thought as I have never seen a set missing coin

You can also trying weighing and comparing with 2007 or 2009 sets as pacgaing similar - if you have an accurate device you will see a 2-3g difference

I would feel ripped off if a coin was missing from a mint set I bought, don't see these as an error

Thanks for the responses. There are no signs of any tampering or any other indications where the coins could accidentally slip out, so I will take them to my friendly post office and ask them (nicely) to weigh them for me to double check for any hidden coins. But, I have carefully felt the packaging for dislodged coins and I'm pretty sure they aren't there.

I forgot to specify that I bought the 2004 set from either the RAM website or RAM order form back (can't remember which now) in 2004 or 2005, so there is absolutely no chance of tampering there. At the time I rang the Mint to complain about it and they said it often happens and to send it back for a replacement. I opted to keep it (in case it was worth something) and just bought another set at the time so I had a complete set. Given that they said it was a common problem, I'm surprised that it seems unusual - and just a little bit glad that I hung on to it.

Any guesses on a value?
