I once saw this piece for like 1000 buy it now an wish I had grabbed it, as it seems to be popular for more of the under the radar less known gold coins. I like the obverse mask design, reminds me of ancient gold, or how I like to think others once appeared.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Uncirculate...em41652725fbEdited by Silverhawk74 04/30/2012 11:31 pm

Looks pretty exotic on the reverse alright. It reminds me of some kind of Inca sun god image or something similar to that. Nice coin, though.

You know what else I like about it Ed, respectable Canadian mint and this coin is one of the most sought after of all the Canada gold coins. I am sure a big reason for that unique image which as you said is similar to an Inca sun God, good call and most importantly there are only 11,610 of them out there baring none being lost.... The Raven its called, bringer of light to the world seems like....

Just last week, I almost won a similar-themed silver example minted in Canada. FM7gHg~~60_58.jpg)

Nice T, that is a great coin. You have a real keen eye for lesser known items such as that coin above....
The mask there oddly enough reminded me of one of the old school Jason's style goalie masks due to the design on the forehead an cheeks....
Curious of the coin weight an silver content?

The gold coin... The Raven Bringing Light to the World. North American West Coast native artistic style of the Haida Nation... Quote:Quote: ... (Canadian) West Coast Native art has also been used on precious collector coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. In 1997, a $200 Canadian gold coin was created using a design called "Raven Bringing Light to the World" by Robert Davidson, one of the most established West Coast Native artists. This design was originally created for a small pendant and in addition to being on the coin, was refitted onto a four foot diameter gilt bronze that currently hangs in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. The inspiration for the design came from the Haida legend which describes the Raven reclaiming the sun back from the Chief of the Sky and returning it to the people of the Earth. The mintage of this limited edition gold coin was only 25,000. --- quoted from the website of --- Free Spirit Galley. The silver coin... Summer Moon Mask, also Haida inspired. There is also a gold version. Another Haida inspired gold piece... Four Seasons Moon Mask. The Raven coin is also considered part of a 4 piece set... I will google some pixs and do a collage, cuz...

There was a major B.C. art theft of Davidson's pieces and not all were recovered... most substantial gold pieces... google for more info. Summer Moon Mask and Four Seasons Moon Mask... I think I've posted info for before. The Four Seasons Moon Mask is an oft used "standard" avatar on this form. Coin only images from here (mine not at hand)... credit where credit is due VVV http://www.jandm.com/script/getitem...CID=5&PID=17The box being the thing. >>> edit to add VVV Four Season Moon Mask Summer Moon Mask(Gold)

I'm really more into the native art aspect of Canadian coinage. In the past, the RCM produced a plethora of NCLT with such designs, but not so much lately... good thing!

Quote: You have a real keen eye for lesser known items such as that coin above.... Thanks, Hawk. My whole collection, or at least the part I love, mostly consists of world NCLTs. I have to stay current on all the new releases and the ever-changing market so I don't overspend. I always admired the pics of US coins that you post, although I'm totally ignorant of their values. Coin collecting comprises so many diverse elements that everyone is almost forced to specialize.

I almost bought the silver one traevin posted, but decided to hold off. A lot of these are surprisingly creepy, which increases their appeal in my eyes :P. Very different.

I had the four coin set that IBGolden posted above some years back, paid around $1800 CAD for it, and it included the mint box. Sold it when the price of gold went up, and made a few hundred on it. The set is worth over $3300 CAD today at melt value. Definitely regret selling that one!
