TPGs seal coins in plastic holders after an in hand appraisal of a raw coin. CAC looks through the plastic and decides if they agree with the earlier appraisal. 1) Why are we supposed to care if CAC puts a sticker on a holder? 2) If CAC'd coins are going for a premium, is this why? "CAC is an active bidder on many CAC coins. In fact, CAC has recently purchased over $100 million of CAC verified coins." http://www.caccoin.com/

Thats mostly accurate. CAC not stickering a coin doesn't mean they disagree with the grade (some of the time it may mean that but they wont admit it), but rather it means that the coin is at the low end of the grade.
You care for the CAC sticker because it means your coin is one of the better coins out there in that grade. Not everything with the sticker has aged well, and not everything without it is at the bottom of the grade, but its just another way to try and distinguish your coin as better than others for resale ect

It's a genius business model. If dealers appraise coins submitted to them- and then sticker the best ones- they can avoid the type of coin that will sit in inventory for a long time. If you know a coin series inside and out- you do not need CAC- but if you are the type of buyer that buys the holder and not the coin- you'd be well advised to get coins with a strong second opinion.

Agreed with CC. Its always nice to have that extra insurance (for lack of a better term) with more expensive coins as well

The CAC sticker doesn't mean much to a collector, the dealers just get a better premium when selling. It was just a great way for the person (who shall remain nameless) who helped start the Slab business to realize more profits for himself and his company.

I like CAC being in the market, because it puts pressure on the TPGs to keep them in line. But frankly, it' is going to get to the point of "turtles all the way down". Buy the coin not the holder, buy the coin not the sticker, buy the coin not the sticker's sticker...

They make a market in their CAC coins and that could mean many things. They could have purchased over $100 million in CAC coins and sold them all already, or any percentage thereof, or taking it to the extreme, they could have bought the same $10,000 coin 10,000 times. Market making is a very powerful activity and one that is not always in line with the best interests of the end customers.

Quote: It's a genius business model. I'll say it's a genius business model, since they buy and sell coins that they put the bean on you are in effect paying them ten dollars a coin for them to tell you if they would be willing to buy it.

Let me get this strait. Some of you good folks think it's OK for the guy that originated the TPG businesses,... now say that some of his coins he originaly stood by as a solid graded coin,.. now need a CAC sticker so they are more solid. HMMMM

All of these companies (with the exception of maybe ANACS and ICCS) are WAY WAY overpriced. I have some good looking coins that I would love to send in....however paying $60-$80 for a single grade plus shipping is outrageous !

I hear you Royal Silver, but what is really outrageous is that many GOOD people have fallen for the TPG scam for years! TPG grading is in itself a good concept but only for authenticity. If you are a dealer it is also good for sight unseen purchases, but, for the collector it's a rip for grading purposes. If you are a collector you should be able to determine the grade for yourself. And if you are a collector with deep pockets and you want to play with the "Big Boys" you better darn well know what you are into instead of relying on a TPG grader who works to 9-5.

CAC & TPGs are just another method of dollarectomy from the wallets of too many people.
