Hey guys,
So I just got back from the bar shooting some pool with friends, and after we paid up and I got my change I got an interesting quarter that I'm sure isn't worth much at all (haven't checked yet), but I haven't seen one so I decided to keep it.
My question is how do you guys make sure nothing happens to your coins when you get them in change? I obviously don't have my 2x2's on me, and at 2 am in a bar there isn't much place to make sure they're safe :P. I usually keep them in a pocket with no sharp objects or corners (like keys for example) and hope for the best until I get home, but I'm sure you guys have better suggestions for me. So can any experienced collectors enlighten me?

I don't do anything in particular. I guess it might make sense to keep a couple flips in your wallet.

I usually carry a few small ziplocks. The coins aren't going to be in there for long (although they are of food grade plastic).

Just wrap them in a piece of paper until you get home.

1. Put them in a separate pocket from the other change. 2. Put them in you shoes. Your socks will protect them from your feet. And limping from the coin producing pain will help keep them from scratching. 3. Hand them to a freind and tell them they are rare and valuable so don't spend them. 4. Order a glass of water and put them in there untill you leave. 5. Take napkins from the bar and place coins in those and then in a separate pocket for other stuff.

I don't know about carrying those small ziplock bags. Seems like it would raise eyebrows if you pulled out a handfull. How often are you guys finding keeps out in day to day commerce?

Any interesting coins that come my way in the course of the day go in my shirt pocket. I give them a closer look when I get home.
I deliberately accumulate coins each day. If I buy a cup of coffee that costs $2.10, I'll pay with three singles even if I have a dime in my pocket, just so I'll get 90 cents to look at.

Here's what I do, normally when I'm out with my dirtfishing rod for a day in the field. Take one of those little orange prescript bottles, (i always remove the label), fill with cotton. Place found coins in there, layered between the cotton. A little bulky, but not a problem for me. It's crucial when I dig silver coins, especially for before and after pics, when the coin is covered with soil and might be abrasive.
