Purchased this Aelia Flaccilla (wife of Theodosius I) yesterday and I am hoping for your opinions on it. I like it, but now I think I may have overpaid ($25.50 shipped). Did I? Thanks.

Also, does it look like that red gunk on the obverse can come off?

Well, it's a weak strike, but about as well preserved as what is normally out there at around that price. Yours is from Constantinople. I have one from Antioch in slightly worse condition which I paid $13.35 shipped in January of this year. You are the only one who can judge if you overpaid or not. Here is the image of my sole Aelia Flaccilla:

Thanks jw for commenting. Yeah I know only I can make that decision. I just want to know what you guys thought of the price. Now I feel that I may have done ok, since most of the others I've seen for around this price were in worse shape.

I think the price was about on par for the market based on what I saw. The coin is kind of rough, but it has full details, enough to attribute and it has a nice color based on the photo.

I think it's a hard mineral, possibly cuprite (CuO2) replacing the copper; there may be a pit underneath the deposit, but you may be able to carefully shave down the raised lump.
Good thing--it's a stable type of verdigris--I have a coin with these red mineral deposits too.

Thanks for the info DV. I changed my mind though about removing it; I have no experience with removing gunk like that and I don't want to ruin the coin.
