Didn't really know where to post, but since there are mostly coins in the set... The set contains: 1864 2 cent piece 1856 half dollar 1863 Indian cent1863 patriotic token ("not one cent") 1862 1 dollar gold coin 1864 Richmond 10 dollar bill 2 bullets Got closeups of the coins but I've never seen a set like this. Googled all over the place but couldn't find one similar to this. Got any idea of the value of it? Would like to think the set's value is higher than the combined value of the coins/bill Any help out there that can shed some light on it? thanks

I also have never seen a set like this before. I'd assume the coins are lower grade, the half dollar looks nice and shiney, so assume cleaned. If the gold dollar is genuine it probably has a value around $200 or so according to completed ebay sales. My guess, and it is only a guess of around $300. As far as being worth more as a set, not true, dealers break sets up all the time to capture the individual coin values.

Having long collected Civil War era coins, tokens and paper, I've not seen this particular set. I'm impressed with the box, but the contents, IMHO, leave something to be desired. Firstly, I'd question whether the gold dollar and the Confederate note are genuine or reproductions. There are 1800's era contemporary counterfeits of those dollars. Also, note that reproductions of Civil War tokens were made in the 1960's; another possibility. If the $10 note is genuine, it's a $30 item. I'm not saying that the pictured items aren't genuine, but they certainly deserve scrutiny.
The format of this Civil War "collection" is sophomoric, uneducated, and that makes me suspicious of the product. What's with the 1856 dates? The Civil War was 1861-65. What in the world are "Southern unionists" and how are "they" connected to this currency? Why is "god" not capitalized? Overall, the "set" looks too generic or plain to me. I do like the box though!

IMHO, the coins, token and note look to be genuine, cleaned/whizzed; all but the cent and token. It's always a good idea to closely check the edges of gold coins in particular. Many gold coins out there are ex-jewelry pieces, removed from bezels, rings, etc. If that's the case, and it's a common date, it's best considered as a bullion purchase.
The bottom line is that if you like it, buy it, regardless of whether you overpay in the eyes of others. There's another option that you have ... Build your own Civil War set! I did just that once, using an old jewelry chest. There are many attractive and larger cases in the market place, too. You could design labels on a computer and print them out, adding some historical notes and emblems; thus, producng a personalized set! Enjoy this great hobby.

Not sure of the significance of the dates, but I too kind of like the set.

Good idea posted above to build your own set, that way you could use a 1861-64 half dollar. Maybe add Three Cent Silver,a Half Dime, dime, quarter, and dollar.

hmmm...as most of you, I really like to set. Been looking at the picture on and off for a while to see if I can convince myself not to buy it...
It strikes me odd that making such a nice set, and then spell "confederacy" over the bill wrong. Maybe they don't use spell check while making boxes

Perhaps, this set was a prototype of sorts that someone thought they might market? All of the contents are relatively easy to obtain. Most folks who buy assembled sets like this tend to prefer history over condition, methinks. If one was to assemble their own set, they'd likely try to upgrade.

The gold dollar piece looks real. This is a good date, fine condition. Surprisingly appears to have been in some circulation, which is rare for these coins.
If you dont mind me asking, how much are you paying for the set?

I was going to pay $350 for it, but as I went to the shop today, someone else had snagged it on Saturday.
It was probably a good deal for $350..oh well. You win some, you lose some.
