I just received a Half Dime that I bought off ebay. The small coin was loose in a large mailing envelope. Even worse there was a large foreign aluminum coin thrown in loose with the Half Dime. Kind of like you load a tumbler with gravel before you start it up. Following is the message I sent the seller:

I just received this Half Dime in the mail from you. It was loose in the mailing envelope and enclosed with a loose aluminum foriegn coin. This is not an acceptable way to ship a valuable old US coin. There is a strong possibility of damage to the coin during shipment. If you are going to continue to sell coins on ebay you need to get some inexpensive coin flips to put the coins in before you ship them. Just trying to be helpful before someone (not me) gives you negative feedback.

His reply: "Hi Colin, I have never dealt in coins before so I appreciate any advice. Where can I get these coin flips? Thanks for your help. PS. I just sent the aluminum foriegn coin as my appreciation of your purchase.
Thanks
Scott"

Moral - just because someone has 100% feedback doesn't mean they know anything about coins. If they don't appear to have sold many coins I am going to start asking about shipping methods before bidding.

I too have received coins loose. The envelope sounded like you were shaking a coin purse. I was suprised they did not "disappear" in the mail.

I have received coins like this also ,, and some them did not make it to me,, they were in an evelope supplied by the USPS which said that the original had torn apart during shipment. and they had recovered what they could .

Very disappointing to have something like this happen.

I hate when your coin has been sticky-taped to the inside of an envelope!

I wrap loose coins in paper and tape them to cardboard or put them in those cheesy flips. Some people dont know and just dont care.

In a follow up - this seller was really a nice guy. I sent him some links for purchasing flips. I know we already have our own resident Grandma's coin collection recipient, but he told me his Grandmother gave him a shoe box full of loose US coins. The Half Dime was in the box. I gave him a link to this site told him it might be a good idea to put all the coins in holders to avoid future damage.
