I just purchased my first hammered coin (been wanting one for some time) and I just have one question. I notice that this particular coin I purchased is a class 9b Edward I Bristol Mint penny. I did some research and saw that there are several different classes. What do these classes mean? Is this used with all hammered coins or just these particular pennies?

(The picture I uploaded is from the site, haven't received the coin yet. When I do, I'll post some new pics.)

Edward I Bristol mint penny, class 9b, AD 1300-02:
Obv: +EDWR ANGL DNS hYB, DWRANGL misstrike - Edward King of England Lord of Ireland, crowned front facing bust with star on breast.

Rev: VILLA/BRI/ STO/LLI, LLIVILLA mis/double strike as are pellets in corresponding angles of cross.
Weight: 1.3 grams. Dia: approx. 18mm.

This classification is particular to Ed I, Ed II, and Ed III pennies. Ed I's coins were prolific in varieties, and classes are there to distinguish those varieties. Coins Ed II and the first coinage of Ed III were so similar in design that the researchers continued same classification. Sometimes it takes quite an investigation to attribute a coin to the correct king.

Some other monarchs have enough varieties to call for classes but the Ed I/II/III's classification is the largest one, I believe. It goes up to Class 15 (times a few subclasses, like A, B, C, etc.)

When I worked in the coin section of our museum I used to have to classify these things - though that was 20 years ago. While I do miss working in the numismatic section there - it was a great job - I certainly don;t miss looking at these things. :)

It's a great coin by the way and svslav has got it spot on.

The only way I can distinguish between the various classes of silver pennies,
is by closely studying an illustrated reference to those classes, when trying to identify a particular coin.

I use the 'Coincraft' catalogue for this.

English hammered silver pennies only comprise a minute proportion of my overall collection, therefore I am NOT an expert in this field.

Nice coin to have in your collection!

A photography tip: crop off the excessive field around coins, and you could upload a bigger image of the coin itself.
