Zinc rot. Throw it back. I'm sure Coop will post his pretty pictures to show the process of what happens

I have a penny I will post at some point, it looks like that the inner metal ate away through to the outer plate. Its ugly and I know this is not worth anything nor collectable but I have to know how that could happen.

As pointed out above, this is damage from zinc rot. Zinc is very corrosive and the copper plating is what protects it. As the corrosion moves out from the hole or split in the plating it forms a circle.

Just wanted to show you a few picks of one penny I found yesterday that is rotting from the inside out, not much different than what you have. I believe that all of these zinc penny rot out , I almost hate to by any to collect.

i was thinking the circles started out this way and then the zinc rot took over.. the edges of the circles are square down. I was kinda hoping it was a crash test dummy for the 1994 year. lol

lol. yes the zinc rot is evident , but I think maybe they might have something else to it.. the pictures are bad . hard to really see.
