I also thought this was a coin forum. Not a soapbox for a bunch of wacky NDP and Liberal supporters

Do you really think that that is politics... as you c all it? so, why do you guys get upset? I think because you do not understand the humor behind it.. ITS ALL ABOUT your COINS AND MONEY.. am not sure what your problem is.. suppose you just happily watch and stand by how they spend YOUR pennies.. relax a bit..life is too short..

I will buy yuou a beer with that one Swrbxxx. I will have to roll a few CENTS first though. One thing on the subject though. The last few Coin shows I have done in BC have definetely seen an increase in sales of nicer small cents. Could be a couple of reasons. Drop in trends prices have helped and the small cent being a current news topic as well.

You know, some Harper haters are conservative, doesn't mean we're "liberals" - that's a distraction in itself.
*Coins and money go hand in hand with politics, so let's both sides cool it. Nobody's on the soapbox, simply mentioning the obvious (to some).

Glenn, you missed the Ministers staff, his jet to take him there and back, his RCMP ( were you part of it?) security detail, Winnipeg police security detail, and all HIS preparation and.... all his orange juices..., never mind the alder smoked arctic char...

54dollarcoin,
I generally agree with you about keeping political discussions out of the coin forum. But, as many posters (including myself) have pointed out, the removal from circulation of the penny was definitely politically motivated.
By the way, you don't insult long standing and well respected members of the coin forum (like Glenzy1, DBM, coingirl, etc) by calling them "left wing nuts" if you don't agree with their opinion.

Not an insult V just a comment like any other .............umm lets see, if the left wingers say something it is usually called freedom of speech, if a Conservative says something it always gets somehow called insulting or politically incorrect. Now since we are getting at the removal of the cent in this thread, one can argue that the removal of the cent from circulation (they are still going to be legal tender and in use)is hardly political at all. It is plain old common sense (CENTS ), just as the removal of the one and two dollar banknotes was in retrospect absolutely the right thing to do. As long as our American cousins continue to use their one cent coin we will still be spending "Pennies" for quite some time. After awhile this non issue will be a non issue!

54dollarcoin, I agree more with the "right wingers" approach with spending tax payer money responsibly than I do with the "left wingers" tax-and-spend approach and worry about the consequences later. But I do have a big problem with working hard all my life and then having this government cranking up my retirement age up to 67 years and me getting less benefits in the end. Then to add insult to injury, these buffoons have to make it look like they are saving us a ton of money by retiring the penny. The benefits of retiring the penny are minimal ($11 million per year ). I think Harper and his cronies spend more than that using government planes to attend hockey games around North America. I do agree with you on the retirement of $1 and $2 paper bills (with their shorter lifetime) making economic sense with their replacement with coins. But those were decisions made by Mulroney (Conservative) for $1 coins and Chretien (Liberal) for $2 coins.

Quote: CBC just announced that we've been making the pennies here in Canada for over 150 years. Isn't that false? 1858+150=2008. What's the problem, except that they're cents?

Sometimes math isn't what it seems, big fred. The RCM was founded in 1908. Before that our coins were minted in jolly old England.

I agree with Libertad, RCM started making pennies in 1908, so the penny has been minted for about 104 years here in good old Canada.

CBC just announced that we've been making the pennies here in Canada for over 150 years. Isn't that false? I know we're talking pennies here but if they can't get a verifiable fact straight, then what else are they not fact-checking?
Canada has never made pennies.

This is all very funny arguing about if it's political or not. ---It's political for sure. Our politicians waist so much that we cant measure and that affect all of us. ---The penny yes I said the penny (cent) was eliminated to distract and show power! This is going to cost us more without it and to change. --glenzy1--Nice try to calculate, for sure you only touched the cost. Many jobs will be affected and it was done with a great big smile! ---They are ignorant and they mostly count on the ignorant, misinform, mislead and spin there actions to suit there agenda to have people fallow there lead and where that doesn't work they do it anyhow.
