Look on the bright side. At least while he's posing and smiling he's not actively putting people out of work and lowering their wages!

Of course he is,hundreds of millions of pennies and planchets, were produced by someone, and later this afternoon he'll push another button to set the wheels in motion to squeeze you for your last cent.

DBM, very well said and much to the point... all the while he is smiling knowing we pay 24 $ for every $ he pays for his pension.... was there really any reason for him to be there other than a TV and Photo op?

CBC just announced that we've been making the pennies here in Canada for over 150 years. Isn't that false? I know we're talking pennies here but if they can't get a verifiable fact straight, then what else are they not fact-checking?

CBC can say anything..the unfortunate part is that many people believe them.. after all, they also are part of Stephens empire...(hopefully crumbling soon, or having an emergency decompression in an F35 at 50,000')

The Canadian Cent 1858-2012 RIP.............................maybe..........this is NOT the first time there has been a stoppage in Cent production in or for Canada. 1860-1875 saw no production from either London or Birmingham 1877-1880,1883,1885,1889. prediction I am going to bet that they make cents in proof or specimen in 2013. Also as an aside keep politics out of the coin discussion forums please........ there are appropriate forums available to Harper bash or bash the NDP left wing nuts or the Liberals or the Bloc or the Rhinos or the Dems or the Republicans or whomever.

According to what I have read, the Canadian penny is like the US Presidential dollar. They are no longer produced for circulation, but they still will be made for collector sets. So, it wasn't really the "last" penny.

Of course there will be collector cents in 2013,they stopped making 50cents for circulation ten years ago and they're still issued as collector coins.Predicting or betting on such a compellingly certain outcome isn't too risky,so I'll predict and am going to bet that Harper will still be PM tommorrow morning.

The end of the circulation cent was a political decision.

The penny removal campaign in Canada was not done to save money (only a meager 11 million dollars a year is saved), but rather to serve as a distraction from other more serious things that were done in the federal budget. They raised the mandatory retirement age from 65 to 67 (forcing people to work longer for less retirement benefits). And the decoy worked, people were focused primarily on the removal of the penny from circulation, a rather trivial issue.
Remember, these are the same guys that spent 2 million dollars for an artificial lake that was setup for 72 hrs to impress world leaders.

I liked the part where the advertising for the budget cost $12 million to tell us things like, for example, $6.5 million was saved by cutting youth employment centres.
