Does anyone besides me collect the large and small dates in their small cent collections? I never hear anything about them. And I think its the large dates have had the engraving of the dies done so the are extra bold detail. The are quite good looking Lincolns...heck, to me they are the best looking obverse in all Lincoln cents

They're both common and they don't have extra holes in most albums, so nobody seems to care.

I collect all the varieties ..

At the end of the Whitman book I have it has several open areas I usually stick the small or large date's in .. or RMPS . I just use the nicest one in the dated hole then any nice variety I just jag in the extra holes provided .

I know most things I like dont seem to have a premium but , I really dont collect for the money or *resell* aspect .. most are priceless to me (any I received as a gift , or from my grand father- or - great uncle when I was younger those will never leave me collection untill I pass'em down ) ..

Just my opinion , I'm sure there is a few others that "may" do the same thing I do . but I keep alot of cents while roll hunting if they have a nice tone to them or heavy polishing / file lines , or like the 1974 lrg and sml dates .. If its shiny its in my collection ..

Good luck with your hunting / collections

The small dates are going to be tougher in very high grade and this especially applies to the S-mint.

These were made in anticipation of the change-over to aluminum and deserve a lot more attention than they get. Mint set coins are all large dates and mint sets are where most gems originate.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

That's right! I remember the aluminum thing now. When I get home tonight Ill read my reference books on it and add more about the history of it and maybe a picture or two.

It is odd that so few have even information about the two completely different types of 1974 Cents. However, in a book called Looking Rhtough Lincoln Cents by C.D.Daughtrey, there are two pages of information on that years coin. The explanations are followed by several pages of photos of those types. The odd thing about those is how no coin Album manufacturer has a place for those. Especially Whitman, since they have slots for almost all of the oddball types.

Its all three mints actually, but the S should be a higher value due to a lower mintage. If I remember correctly none of the TPGs recognize the LD/SD as a variety for the '74 small cent.

They're really easy to distinguish the 74 LD/SD compared to e.g. the '70-S LD/SD. You can even tell from the reverse - without magnification. Not sure why they don't grab the same attention as the '82 SD/LD given that they have similar historical significance relating to the composition change.

Only if you really care about varieties... I am guessing you might.
