I am considering purchasing this one. The only fault I can see is on the base of the chair on the reverse. Is it common for pieces of the die to break off? Thanks.

The bit missing out of the baseline below the chair would not worry me one little bit.
If you do decide to buy, have a close look into tha flan cracks on the edge of the coin, with a 10x or stronger loupe. If the surfaces INSIDE the cracks are very rough and crisp, you can be sure that the coin was not cast.

The 'tesorillo' site will give you a few clues of what to look for.

Impossible to pick that sort of detail up from the screen in the pictures presented.

So far, this coin looks quite OK to me, and a nice coin to boot.

Flan shape a little ragged (usual for denarii of this period) all legends complete, and nice complete design detail.

Even better if you are sure of the reputation of the seller.

Thanks for the advise! The coin is selling on ebay from a dealer I have dealt with in the past who offers an unconditional guarantee of authenticity.

I also don't see anything wrong with the coin. I'd say right around $50.

I'd be pretty happy with that coin
