I have never seen such an strange edge.. It's my first 5 Rupee from 1996 I have in my collection, but I can't imagine that it should look like this.. It's almost as to separate half's are glued together.. Any thoughts on this strange edge?

I have some as well, I randomly grabbed 6 and most have those edges. I think it is rather "normal" because the standard for the Indian Mint is not so high... seems a bit like the Belgium Mint '

Seeing that this coin type is different from most other types 1 rupee 2 rupee etc. the thickness of the coins causes these strange edges more often it seems to me. Indian coins have a lot of errors in general, it's just the Indian mentality

I think it's real though, just really worn and a strange edge. But a lot of "modern" coins from India have these strange appearances. Again, they don't have high standards at the mint..

But why would you think it's a cast fake, could you elaborate on that a bit

Here are obverse and rverse sides from the ones I posted, notice the one in the down left corner with the greased die. And the left top one with the strange edge. I can take some better pics in the day if you want to compare, I have a few more 5 rupee coins with the same like edge.

Test it for comparison ring tone against a known genuine coin, and weigh it.
I suspect that you may find that it is genuine. With that amount of wear, ir may be 1% or so below standard weight.
If that is the case, that means that the edge must be in error, courtesy of the Mint.

The surface looks like sand. Maybe it's from making dies out of recycled circuit boards.
