My wife and I found this in my mother in law's things after she passed a few years ago.

The signature is from Hugh Herndon who co-piloted the first non-stop trans-pacific flight in 1931. His family funded the venture.

My mother in law moved to NYC in about 1935 and I rather doubt they met in her native Ohio so I'm guessing the autograph was not along on the 1931 flight.

She worked as a secretary in an office, but also modeled. I can guess than Herndon tried to "make time" with her. However, she neither mentioned him nor the note to my wife, even though she did mention some of the well-known men she had met in NYC in the 30's and 40's.

His signature is different on the bill than in 1931:

(Scroll down for a 1931 signature)

In '31 he used "Jr" and on the note he did not which leads me to believe he signed the note sometime after his father died, apparently subsequent to 1931.

Sure wish we'd heard the story behind the note. It was fairly old by 1931 or '35.

Neat, although I am not usually a fan of "autographed" currency (which I would consider "graffiti").

I forgot to add it was a series 1899. That would have been visible, except that I needed to cut down on the size of the photo.

The note itself is not great with several folds and some rough spots around the edges.

That is a very interesting note .. that I am sure would be good to keep in the family.

I found it interesting that the co-pilots name is Herndon. When I hear that name I think
about the USS Central America that went down in a hurricane in 1857, with a large amount of gold coin and bullion. Being shipped to the east coast from the California gold fields. The captian of the USS Central America's name was Herndon. It was the Titanic of the 19th century. The town of Herndon Virginia was named for him.

It would be really cool of that Herndon was related ....

Welcome to CCF.

Nice note.

Consider having it authenticated by a grading service for the signature.

There are collectors that would "pay up" for notes like this especially on an 1899 note with historical significance.

The paper money grading services are not going to authenticate the signature only the note.
