On my way home from work yesterday I did my new year resolution ... buy more silver. So I swung by the dealer and grabbed 2 ounces. One Maple and this little bar, it was $1 over spot and comes with a really nice case. Thought it was kind of neat, I'm assuming they were given out as promotional gifts.

As a new member lets see how my image posting skills are...

Welcome to the board, an no doubt Traiven may like that oddity of a bar, as he posted a triangle Canadian coin the other day which was blue an had a dairy cow on it, so similar theme, an first thing I thought of when seeing this. I like that piece, very neat with the old style milk jugs, nice pickup!!

Oh mine! Isn't that made by the famous Johnson Matthey, once known as Johnson Matthey & Mallory?

Also I see a JM stamp which of course makes me think Johnson an Mathey but it says JM & M which is odd....

The date is 1957 an not sure which state that is, but pretty sure it is a New England state....

Thanks Amath for answering my question, BEFORE I even asked it about JM&M, rof....

May notice how it has almost completed the tone process getting way dark, an you can see finger print toning around the .999 fine silver from the oils an acid in the human body....

Yep it's Johnson Matthey & Mallory ... at least that's what research shows.

That is not a state but rather the province of Ontario.

No problem, Hawk. I knew you were going to point out the fingerprints toning the moment I saw the pictures. :)

I got a question though. If a bar/coin has toned like this, is it still worth to seal or encapsulate it? Or just hold it with bare hands and have more fun?

Did more search on JM. It changed its name from JM&M to JM in the 70s.

You can tell geography is one of my stronger subjects, lol....

Great to know about the extra M on the old J&M bars, an again nice piece of silver history there....

Even my girlfriend who has no interest or thought of silver saw me trying to figure out what state it was, an on her phone she found an auction for it an said its 46 bucks, an that's a province of Canada. You don't say, I replied, rof....

Amaths at that point I would not be worried about handling an old bar, but if ones a capsule that would be fine as well....

Thanks Hawk. That makes sense. Personally, I don't really like the feeling of plastics in between me and the silver.

Wow, 46 bucks. I'm sure some JM collectors will consider that. Great buy, Center Pin.

I wonder if this was a giveaway for being a 500 gallon customer?
I once was a milkman delivering glass bottles of milk door to door as a younger man.

Wish my dairy had those, My mom would have been a 500 gallon customer many times over.
As kids we got 3 half gallons 4 times a week.
3 half gallons from the dairy I ended up working for on 2 days and
3 half gallons from the "other" dairy ( who had the best chocolate milk in the world ) on the other 2 days.
We ate tons of cereal. Puffa puffa rice, Quisp and Quake, Trix ( when you got three flavors and they were all round. )
Coco Krispies, Coco Puffs, Sugar smacks, Frosted flakes, Lucky Charms and Froot Loops by the cases wholesale.

500G customer, that would make sense. I was wondering what the 500 was all about.

500 gallons never crossed my mind. First thing I thought of was 500 grains of silver.
