Has anyone ever put together an XF set? I really like a travelled coin, but not a worn and beat beat up coin. I think I am going to put a Lincoln XF set together. I am sure its been done before, but I never heard anyone mention it.

I am working on an XF or greater set at the moment for lincoln wheats. I love the set all though the coins dont have a lot of metal value in them...BUT!! Its an awesome set to have. Lincoln was a great man in this country!

That is cool Casutherland and I share your passion for the Lincoln wheats as well as the rest of the small cents. I personally do not even think about the intrinsic value of my collection, its the building of a collection that sends a thrill through you every time a hole is filled

What I was referring to was more on the lines of a set that was strictly one circulated grade. Made up of coins that have had some travel to them yet still attractive to look at. Not some coin that has been stuck in someones collection since the day it left the coin roll.

A set that could fill the full color spectrum of copper coins as well as the standard color classification of BN, RB, & RD and also range mint luster from no mint luster to all most full mint luster. A set of small cents with character.

Why one circulated grade? You mention a lot of details that would include coins better than XF though.

I want the best examples of a truly circulated set and XF coins fit that criteria to a tee. AU do not get much circulation at all and MS coins are uncirculated. I will still have my main set. This will be a secondary set.

I have 10 Albums of Lincoln Cents in Whitman Classic Albums. They are in order from #1 to #10 and also in order of grades. By that I mean #1 is all MS going downward in grade to #10. This has been happening since I started by replacing a coin with a better one and moving the replaced one into the next set. Acquiring a really high grade Cent for set #1 then becomes a problem since this means moving the one from #1 to #2, from #2 to #3, etc. to #10.
From #10 the replaced coins go into a 2x2 then into a Whitman 2 row cardboard box awaiting the start of possibly set #11 and/or #12.
Somewhere in that mess is an XF set.

My Lincoln Wheat Cents run from G to XF (with a couple of lucky find exceptions). I really enjoy the chocolate brown look coupled with the history (not just of the coin, but my building this set over the last thirty years).

Only the long set and XF is a minimum not an absolute. I do try to get them in chocolate. Post 1933 is MS RD(complete but needs a few upgrades). I have considered putting together the wheats in MS brown to match the long set. Maybe one day.

I bought another coin I once told myself I wouldn't buy. A XF-40 1922-D No D die pair #2. I thought I was getting the coin $250 under its value until (after I bid) I remembered the buyers fee , which was $300. Oh well. The reason I mention this is that it will fill a hole in my XF collection. It will not be going into my main collection 1856-1974.

That would be an ambitious project, I do like the idea. You'll be surprized how hard it will really be unless you cheat with some AU coins.

I decided to work a little on a lowball set. That's a complete set in the lowest possible grades. I'm always looking out for P-AG grade coins that look nice (not cleaned or damaged). I like them when you can just barely make out the date and MM.
