I was thinking of putting together a set of proof State Quarters to go with my uncirculated set. I can get the 1999-2007 proofs in original packaging as a group for $38.00, but the 2008 would cost $34.00 just for it. Why? The mintage figures are not that much different for 2008.

2012 RedBook says $85 for the Proof set, which is $10 higher than the Silver Proof set. Strange... here are a couple of links with some info on it, they both say early, unexpected sellout and low mintage have combined to raise the prices on the 2ndary market.

Or are you looking just for the quarters sets? Even those are $45 for Proof and $35 for Ag Proof in the Red Book. Must be the same reasoning.

I can't answer as to why the hike in price (agree it must be mintage and availability). but where can you get the proof sets for $38 from? That sounds a really good price.

I think he was talking about just the quarters sets.

The 2008 proof set is the lowest of the 10-year run, and I suspect that speculators bought the majority of the sets and are holding on to them. They were expensive two years ago relative to the 2007 and 2009 sets, and had the odd anomaly of being a bit more expensive than the 2008 silver proof set. They are at parity now. The set that's following 2008 with a decent premium over issue price is the 2010, which has a lower mintage than even the 2008.

Good news. I got a 2008-S Quarter proof set this weekend from a local dealer. He knew that I was looking for one and wondered why so expensive. He thinks that the popularity with that set is the Alaska quarter. I will have to look a little more into mintage's for these quarters. He also had the 1999-S through 2007-S proof quarter sets. All ten sets came home with me for $62.50. $27.50 for the 2008-S, and $35.00 for the 1999-S through 2007-S. Now that I have all the Unc. P and D and the Proofs it may be time to look into the proof silver ones. Well maybe if silver comes down some.

The 1999 Silver Proof Set of quarters is EXPENSIVE!!!!!!

Sit down before looking. I managed to finish the State Quarters in PDSS without my wife noticing our check book total

Great deals. Glad to hear your local dealer came through for you. It pays to buy local, sometimes.

Fortunately it is much lower now than it was several years ago.
