Somebody is missing a proof set or two! I stopped at one of my local stores where I sometimes get silver back in change. I always ask if they have halves and take any of the dollar coins they have off their hands as a small favor since no body wants those things. Well, he pulls a big handful of halves and dollar coins out of the register and counts out $32.50. Out of that bunch I got (1) 2008P NIFC half, (1) 1979S proof half, (1) 1988S proof half, (1) 2008S proof Sac dollar, (4) assorted 2008S proof Pres dollars, and a 1967 40% half. A few of the other halves look like they may have come from mint sets as well, as they look to be in mint state and I have both P & D of the same years. The proofs all have a few small scratches from being handled, but I keep any proofs I find even if they are impaired a bit. This is the second time in the last couple of weeks that I have gotten proofs from this store.

Hmmm. It seams as if someones spouse got mad at them and threw the mint sets into their pockets. ;)

That is awesome. I never thought to try picking coins from stores I frequent. I will have to give that a try.

Spouse? More like a child or grandchild sneaking in to get some "spending"money.

I always hope such dumps are just from an uninformed heir, not theft.

I don't know why you would damage coins that could be in someone's collection.

Dooly; Those look like nice proofs. They at least need cardboard 2x2's. I can send you some if they don't sell them in England.

Holy crow, those are shiny!
Tim, great idea. I have a couple of customers who do this (I think there are actually four), asking if we have any "gold dollars" whenever they come in. Of course, I'm on the other side of the cash drawer so my pocketful of "junk change" already ensured the "good stuff" can find a home in my pocket . . .
How exactly are you keeping the clerk from knowing what you're up to, though? I'm curious--I'd think he'd start cherrypicking.
