I am having a garage sale this weekend and I would like to sell some of my coins. I've got a hundred or so ikes that I want to unload and I wanted to get some opinions on how to go about it. I was thinking to just fill a locked plexiglass box that I have (bolted down of course) with them and sell them for... maybe $1.25 each? is that a reasonable price? Most of the ones I have are 1978D that are in really nice shape (for circulated coins anyway)

I would suggest selling them on ebay or on here. Selling them at a garage sale is iffy... there are a lot of people that not trust worthy that go to garage sales. If you do decide to sell them there, I would suggest maybe putting out just a few coins and if someone shows interest, then get the rest out. Just be careful.

This is a garage sale. Start at $2.00 and negoitiate. I buy at yardsales all the time. I try to pay for my smaller buys with clad IKEs & JFKs. people love them. I once had a hard negoitiation with a lady and we settled on a price. I pulled out a handfull of JFKs and she said if she had known I would be paying with them she would have accepted my first offer.

Putting money out on a table at a garage/yard,estate sale is taking a real chance. True not a lot of crooks attend those but it only takes one person with a gun. And if in the hundreds, that is asking for a problem. You would be smarter to just put them up on ebay, take to a coin show, take to a coin store or just place an add here if and when your able. I think you need a lot more posts to ba able to sell here though. just remember that a hundred or more of those is a HUNDRED plus dollars to a criminal.

I definitely agree with all of your safety concerns. I would not put more than 15 or so out at a time for safety. I have sold jewelry with a similar setup and it has worked fine. I make sure that the only way they could walk off with the box is if they had a crow bar and a hack saw. Unless someone is really desperate it shouldnt be a problem.
CaptainFwiffo, where are you trying to sell them? From what I hear they are rather sought after. It surprises me that you are having such a hard time.

Quote: I have a hard time getting face value for them.. I am pretty sure that any retail establishment would be willing to give you face value for them in the form of a sale! LOL

I've got four rolls of them up for sale on the forum here!
I'd spend them at retail establishments, but I look for them at banks (to search for silver and varieties), and I've had some of these come back around to me more than once. I'd like to get them out of my area so that I don't waste time on Ikes from the bank that I've already been through.

If you are looking to get only $1 a piece, then I would suggest using them to buy gas or something. They are already worth $1 a piece so why go to the hassle? I had a fair amount of luck selling some on craigslist for something around $1.50 each.

You could always just keep them. Just saying.

I'm already keeping too many. Four rolls of Ikes can fill a few of the better-date holes in my Mercury dime album. Maybe I'll spend them next time I hit an out-of-town coin shop.

I'm always looking for them at my local banks. Whenever I find them; I get them. The tellers keep telling me that they don't see them that often. What I enjoy doint with them is to play poker with them with my friends. I insist that I get them back at the end of the evening. It makes me feel like a riverboat gambler in a way. Something about riffling them on the table that I like. Who knows - just pretending with my sanity. Playing with Susan B's, Sac's, or the new Presidential dollars just isn't the same, and I'm not bringing out the Morgan or Peace dollars. Know what I mean.

baysinger626 if I was anyway near to you this weekend I'd take them off you hands.
They are the last of the real size dollars and I'm having a lot of trouble finding them.
The trouble with putting any type of price on them, is that people that come to a garage are there to haggle and will try to get them for less than $1 and are looking to get things on the cheap.

I had about 100 of them a few years ago. I put $1.50 each for them at a garage sale, and settled on $1.25 each for the lot. Not bad since I got them at the bank the night before.
