I have this coin that has made me wonder for years what it is. After searching online, I see it may be a Spanish replica. How can you tell?

the Spanish had beautifully-minted coins for hundreds of years.
This looks like a knock-off, of the sort made for tourists.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The design is that of a "Reyes Catolicos" real, or multiple thereof, struck in Spain in the early 1500s. These were made of silver. Given the greenish-grey patches on the reverse and the brownish colour it appears in the photo, I'd assume yours is bronze or brass.

It's higher-quality than the commonly-encountered replica with garbled lettering that pops up on the forum regularly (here is the latest example), but I'm afraid yours is still a replica.
