Looks like the right forum, so here we go...
Anyone here have any interesting Dutch states, i.e. Deventer, Kampen, Holland, Utrecht, etc?
I'm particularly fascinated by Dutch history, namely, the provincial coins. Problem is, they're rare and quite expensive.
For those of you who have them, which do you have? How did you get?
Just trying to start some discussion about these coins...

Everything "Dutch" or "Low countries" from pre-Napoleonic times is technically "Provincial" - coins in the name of a unified Netherlands didn't commence until after the Batavian Republic was founded in 1795. Prior to this, all coinage was issued in the names of the constituent states. I've got a few Dutch provincials, mostly copper duits... here are some of the more notable examples. "Austrian Netherlands" corresponds more-or-less to modern Belgium. The last "country" on my OFEC List is Zutphen, a small region in what is now Gelderland province, the Netherlands. One of my few "O" countries is Over˙ssel, also spelled Overijssel. I've got a couple of larger silver coins, too. From Friesland I've got a Lion Dollar, and from Holland I've got a gulden. Dutch colonial coinage pre-1795, issued in the name of the VOC (United East Idia Company), were also issued under the auspices of the provinces, though normally only the most powerful provinces did so. Holland, Westfriesland and Utrecht are represented on my VOC coins. The provincial silver guldens of the late 1700's are particularly sought after here in Australia, as they form part of the "Proclamation series" of foreign trade coins used here in the penal colony era.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I have a 1744 VOC duit. Got it for $10 on ebay, sort of won it by accident. I really didn't want it at first but when I received it I was glad I shelled out the $10. There is a guy from New York I believe who specializes in these VOC duits and has a website where he sells them. If interested I can find it again and post it here.

Of the Dutch provinces, I have: Gelderland Groningen Holland Utrecht I also have the County of Holland. I'm working on getting Deventer, Kampen, and Nijmegan. Various VOC coins are in my collection, but they're not as interesting. I have Austrian Netherlands and Spanish Netherlands as well, particularly Namur. Well, I've managed to obtain a Batenburg coin since last. Anyone have a idea how common those are on ebay?

I have an interest in Austrian Netherlands coins, but they're vanishingly rare on the market, even if reasonably-priced.

I'm nowheres near ready to reliably grade these yet, Jim. My best guess is in the neighborhood of F/VF for mine and VG/F for yours. They both have large contrasts between obverse and reverse, and I think mine is better detailed through the cross.

Thanks Jim. I think I'll be on the look out for a better one though. The cleaning is pretty ugly.

I expected some cleaning. I was hoping it hadn't been in the last few years and would have toned over by now. This looks like a fresh polish to me.
