Here they are   1938 VF - not a bad coin   1939 a decent near EF piece, marred by cabinet tone lines (These affect many of my pre 1961 coins along with some bad cleaning as seen here and in the 50s coins)   1949 - EF but cleaned and cabinet lines. I realise 1939 and 1949 coins in less than MS state are basically scrap value only - that is pretty much what I paid. The group was missing coins like 1945, 1947 and 1948 not surprisingly.   1950 - VF - gVF likely cleaned and cabinet line, 3 lines in water but this is a nice piece. All these coins have eye appeal. I will show more in later posts. |

Some more of those coins.   1951 Closer to EF, again cleaned and cabinet lines   1952 - As above no waterlines   1953 - Probably better than EF, but still cleaned - the coins get more common as we reach Queen Elizabeth   A bit more worn than 53 and still cleaned, yet a nice coin in my opinion. That pretty much covers the earlies. The later coins if you want to see them are mostly AU or UNC and from 1961 onwards are not cleaned, but I realise how common they are. I will show them if you like, otherwise its up to you. I don't have 1954, 56 or 57 and the next coins would be the 1958 BC dollars (I have 2, one is AU but stained, the other is EF and cleaner). |

Nice coins Princetane. Can someone explain what "cabinet lines" are and how they happen?

When a coin is left in a cabinet exposed to air and toning forms where the edge of the cabinet met fresh air. Also when coins are stored in too small sized or half covered wallets (The Black lines on my coins).

Rubber bands (elastics) will do that on on a stack of 2x2s.

Nice pieces. I'd be curious to know if those 'cabinet lines' could be removed or faded with acetone?

Nice examples! I would definitely try some acetone on the first 1858 to see if it improves. |
