I could be completely wrong here, but I would agree that the numeral and letters would suggest it was the No. 5, Base Ordnance Depot in Tel-El-Kebir, Egypt. The further lettering I can't fathom, it appears to be 1 S.D..?
If so, it could be, 1. Supply Depot? Therefore, there's a possibility this individual was in the RASC (or indeed attached, so then, potentially he could have been REME, ACC, RE, RAMC...etc), or perhaps even the RAOC too?
Hence, in my novice opinion: it might be that the depiction of the sphinx and pyramids is the fundamental epitome of the theatre, and the pre 1952 representation of the Tudor Crown ultimately - not primarily of course - symbolic of the British & Commonwealth land, sea and air forces.
So, perhaps, a more generic theme in design, rather than a regiment specific; which would coincide with the dates being wartime, too.
Kind regards,
Marcus
