Hi everybody,
I am new here ,I have some problems with my Morgen dollars :
their diammeter must be 38.1 mm or 1.5 inches , but I meassured at my 1886 O mintmak 37.8 mm .
Just want to ask if this is normall that am ancient coin have not exactly the desired diametter ?

Are you measuring it with a micrometer or are you eyeballing it with a ruler? If you are using a micrometer, then no it is not normal. At the MOST it would be off by .1 mm and it would be larger than the 38.1 mm standard not smaller.

Aye first use a good set of calipers to get the diameter. If it's off that much and the reeding isn't very worn down, you're probably looking at a counterfeit.

Follow the other tests here to double-check:

its old but not ancient. Thats reserved for the roman coins ect.

The mint presses of the day were more than accurate enough to strike with better than 0.1mm accuracy of diameter. If quite worn, though, I could see a diameter of 37.8mm but the reeding would need to be significantly and visibly worn.

To give you an idea of the quality of the Morgan & Orr presses used to mint Morgans, I have read that there are still some in use today at the San Francisco Mint, 130+ years old. The original Carson City Press #1 is still used to press medals.
