Roll searching on and off over the past year or two, one consistent thing I've noticed is that 2005 Lincoln cents are somewhat rare for me to find in my area/from my CU.
For example, right now I have $10 FV sorted on my table. For each year since 1959 I typically have multiple coins from at least one mint (more commonly P in my area) of each year:
1960's: 1-6 coins each year 1970's: 10-15 coins each year 1980's: 13-26 coins each year 1990's: 12-24 coins each year 2000: 28 2001: 16 2002: 9 2003: 8 2004: 9 2005: 2 2006: 19 2007: 43 2008: 34 2009: 14 2010's: Many coins each year
The above is typical to what I've been seeing for the past two years.
Looking at the mintage figures, there's nothing out of the ordinary in 2005 compared to other years that decade. I'm not sure why I don't see too many 2005. Is this just something odd I'm seeing on my end? Why are 2005 cents the rarest ones for me to find between 1959-2012? Why wouldn't other years with similar mintage stats be equally as rare?

7,700,050,500 pennies were made in 2005
6,836,000,000 the year before
8,234,000,000 the year after
I think it's just a coincidence

I try to keep thinking that, but it oddly keeps happening -- for more than a year now. Every now and then while going through a box there might be some rolls loaded with certain years in them or occasionally I'll have a streak where a certain year and MM won't be very prominent which is just something that will happen roll searching. But these 2005's specifically on my end tend to be scarce in nearly every box regardless of which CU branch I get it from. Maybe someone else in my area really likes to collect 2005's or something.

Maybe less '05s were released in your part of the country? Just a guess.

This would be Rochester, NY.

They seem to be plentiful around here (North Dakota). No more or less common than other dates with the exception of the 2009 set.

dosent mean much; I had a heck of time finding uncirculated rolls of 1984-d for a good price they do not have a big difference in mintage yet they cost alot! any year you want on ebay rolls and rolls of them yet search for rolls of 2005 and 1984-d yield 0 results for uncic

The best explanation is that they were not released in your area during 2005. This is certainly possible if the banks did not order any. Then it could take years for coins to filter in from other parts of the country in any numbers. Perhaps some other roll searcher in the Rochester area could provide some insight.

I get tons of them and I am from Bergen County, New Jersey so my area isn't too far from where you are. Maybe the banks where you live didn't order many pennies. I believe banks in our area get their coins from the New York Fed.

I see a lot of 2005 mixed in with my change, so I would say it is just you.
