The "gal" reference was what I needed to remind me of where I had seen the flecked appearance before - galvanised iron.

Copper itself is crystalline in nature and has grains, the boundaries of which can be highlighted through the use of an acid, although whether this would be likely to deliver the mottled appearance seen in the listing is debatable.

Well, at least a penny could be put to good use in an experimental array for electroplating
