Found this 1982 and the letters are flattened around the rim. It doesn't look to be struck off-center, and the coin size is consistent with a regular penny. Any idea what could cause this? It's on the front and the back. The rim isn't squished or anything. It's perfectly round. I've never seen anything like this before.

I have seen a few of these on 1982's and other coins , just looks like the obverse strike is a bit off, I know if it goes right into the rim cutting off some of the letters it is considered a MAD .I have also seen them with the "L" in Liberty right up against the rim.

Actually, the L in LIBERTY is extra "fat". It spreads out over to the left side rim.

It's common on the early '80's.
