I recently acquired a(nother) Braided Hair Large Cent (sellers images) for my 7070. It is the Slanted 5 version, but there is also an Upright version as well.

I did not see any differential (slanted or upright) on Numismedia.com, would that mean that there is discernible difference between the two varieties?

Does anyone known Newcomb Numbers for Large Cents?

Thanking you in advance!

I feel that this would be an AU50 based on the wear on the hair above the ear and the leaves on the reverse.

What do you think?

From what I can see, it looks like I would grade it as XF-40. Please keep in mind the pics are very dark. I imported them into PhotoScape and lightened them considerably to look the coin over. One question I have, on the reverse is the line from the right upper side of S of STATES to just above the o OF a die crack? And are there any other very fine die cracks on the reverse or obverse?

I am not sure about the coin (probably a scratch on the slab) as of this message, other than it is in a PCGS GENUINE slab code 92. I did not think about "image enhancement" here is what photobucket did to it;

Code 92 = Cleaned. OK lets say the mark I see on the reverse is on the plastic. I'm going to call it a Newcomb 3 based on the date digits positioning, with a Rarity of 1. Other thoughts?

There are at least 21 varieties in 1856 (Grellman second edition) 13 of them are slanted or italic 5's. The pictures aren't good enough (and I don't wish to take a lot of time with it) but it is either N-3 as Penny Guy said or N-17 which is an R-2. So price it as type coin money, no premium for the variety.

This coin is "out for delivery". I will post some better (I hope) images soon.

Thanks for the replies and info!
