hi all,
maybe slightly off topic but I found this cool painting I hadn't seen before by hans memling, a famous renaissance art guy. this is late 15th century, the nero coin looks pretty darn good....

I'd love to add that one to my collection! If you like this, consider reading:
Numismatics - an Ancient Science - a Survey of its History, Elvira Eliza Clain-Stefanelli, Contributions from the Museum of History and Technology: Paper 32, US Government Printing Office, 1965 (Original Price $1 - but I doubt it is still in print and $10 would be very fair)

The painting is the cover illustration.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this painting, but had not noticed it depicted Nero. Obviously, it was a prized possession of the man who commissioned the painting. Look at the size compared to his hand--do you suppose it's a medal?

Pretty cool.

Maybe it was this one? The legend is a little off though.

The medallic nature of the sestertii of the coins of Nero make them amongst the best examples of Roman art on coins.

Just imagine what they would have looked like when freshly minted, especially with that rich golden tone of orichalcum!

Wow, that would be a very cool painting to have hanging in my coin room!!

=> I'm sure that it's not, but it almost looks like a bit of a joke, no? ... it kinda looks like somebody painted-in the hand holding the coin, after the fact!!? (kinda like doctoring-up the Mona Lisa)
