I'm trying to learn a little bit about grading new coins. I'm going to post different Kennedy's because they are big enough I think I can get pictures. So whatever you grade them as, please add a little about what is stopping them from being a grade higher or lower.

Here's the first one. It happens to be in an air-tite.
Thanks.

Pictures are not the best for fully accurate uncirculated grading but based on what I can see, I would go MS65.

biokemist6: thanks for grading. I was thinking that but I have no confidence in my grades yet.

This coin is BU (super shiny) but it has a those little scratchy looking lines about from the rim to the stars all the way around. I assume these are flow or maybe when a die starts wearing down they appear. For sure they aren't bag marks. Even most of the scratchy looking stuff on the face are not bag marks.
1. Do they count in the grade? If so, how much do they influence it?

Good question, I would like to know the answer to that as well. I would guess that they do impact the grade because they dont look good and I dont believe they count as a major variation for any coin (could be wrong on that... I'm not that informed). So they are just marks on the coin as far as grading is concerned. But I don't know thats just my guess.

I agree with biokemist6; hard to tell past MS62-63 from just one picture but I would go with MS64. It is well struck which may be characteristic of the date/mm but I dont really know about that... all I know is my MS60 and up JFK halves from 64-70 tend to have not as good of a strike on the obverse.

buy the book "MAKING THE GRADE"......indespensible for grading coins, with the color-coded hot-zone charts, you cannot go wrong.....on this coin, the dinged up rim takes it down at least 1 grade, and, hairlines, planchet chatter strikes, and bagmarks 2 more...I'd say you'd be lucky to pull an MS61 out of this due to issues...planchet chatter Kills grading post 90 kennedys...it's so hard to find clean coins, with perfect rims, strong strikes, great luster, and no dings in hot zones(area directly across from nose, in field, cheek/jaw line, date, obverse, and, eagle neck feather area reverse.
I suggest buying a few slabbed coins, so you can see what grade looks like.
