cc99999: Thanks for grading. Now I have a further question which I hope gets answered.

I'm really trying to learn some grading skills. When I get coins from the mint I know they are uncirculated. But like the coin shown above, I can't tell whether it's circulated or uncirculated because I don't know what to look for.
I went to a coin store yesterday and the guy who owns it took an interest and tried to show me. He looked at a Kennedy coin I had and said it was VF ? something and then showed me some older uncirculated silver dollar. He was using what I think was a 20x loupe. I looked at the coins with his loupe and I just couldn't see what he was talking about. Rub spots, little squiggly marks? I know what bag marks look like but I can't identify these other marks.

Any help, especially with pictures showing marks of interest might get my dumb eyes educated.

Thanks

Photograde is your answer! Search on Amazon or a coin book store. Try the PCGS website for some online photograding.

When I used to try to grade stuff, I found that these books eventually made me feel like I could converse with the experts.

BTW, since I've been doing so much circulation hunting, now I just keep what I like, and don't worry so much about the grading specifics. But I am still helped by studying grading years ago.

As you are suspecting, it will be worth your while to investigate and train yourself.

Typically, though this is not always the case, coins you will find roll hunting- unless they are from new unused rolls will be circulated. It's possible that a circulated coin could grade MS- but more often than not, they won't.

This isn't a hard and fast rule for all coins- and I'm kind of making up the percentages- but most mint state coins work like this

MS-60 - RARE
MS-61 - Highly Uncommon
MS-62 - Lower end of typical
MS-63 - Typical
MS-64 - higher end of typical
MS-65 - Uncommon
MS-66 - Best Typical Samples, Highly Uncommon
MS-67 - Scarce, appears nearly perfect to the untrained eye
MS-68 - RARE, for some coins maybe not possible
MS-69 - Extremely Rare or not possible
MS-70 - Not possible

Look at the high points to see if there is any wear.

Either the ANA grading book or a photograde book is a great start to learn about grading.

I have to say that the photograde is not very useful to me fo r Kennedy half dollars. No angle shots so that shadows might reveal the scratches and dings. I see so little difference between the MS63 and MS61 that it's a joke. How can a coin with Kennedy's total outline untouched by markes yet still be an MS61?
