Thinking of buying this Julia Domna, and I would like to know your opinions on it, and perhaps most importantly, how much you would feel comfortable paying for it. Thanks guys!

Recently I had someone offer to sell me a Julia Domna Denarius even though I wasn't in the market for one. He wanted more then $50 for the coin and of course I balked. I did some research and found most Denarii of hers were selling for $30-$45 in about the same condition of the coin you post. So I offered an appropriate amount which was accepted once the seller checked out the prices.
I like your coin. This is one of those where she appears old and not so pretty. If you have been following Doug's post, he indicated that he believed some of the earlier Domna coinage made have the bust styled after Manlia Scantilla. This portrait resembles the portrait on the coin he posted, so possibly this is an early issue.

I saw that coin and the price for it. I think the price is good for the grade.

Thanks for your thoughts. JW, this coin falls perfectly in the price range you provided; its $34.50 shipped. I really enjoy how things can be inferred from subtle things such as bust detail. I'd have thought it was the opposite and was from later in her reign as Augusta. I'm going for the coin, thanks again. If anyone else has opinions, please feel free to post them

This coin is from the middle period. As I mentioned, portraits vary a lot and you can not date Domna coins from that. I can not explain why Domna did not control the way she was shown more closely. Perhaps vanity was not her thing. I have several pages on the Severans so repeating everything here would just bore those not interested even more.
IMHO $35 is a fair price for this example. I prefer the early period coins which include DOMNA in the obverse legend but one could say that you need at least three Domna coins to show her properly and this would be a reasonable choice for the middle period after Septimius was fully in control but before his death when she became the mother of the emperor rather than the wife. The 'fault' of this coin is that the portrait is not one of the cute ones but I suspect it might be closer to accurate.

ValiantKnight => that's a very good looking coin at a very good looking price (I've been looking at a few versions that were also quite nice, but they were close to "3" times as much as your gem) ... => so, good score!! (hey, I'm slowly learning that $$$ have something to do with collecting coins) Ummm, but I am still a total believer in my "Blitzkrieg" approach to coin-collecting! (hmmm, maybe there is a middle-ground?) Cheers, coin-friends!!
