Recently I picked up a 1922 no D
Lincoln Cent. I did some research before I purchased the coin and even more research now that I have the coin in hand.
I was able to tell that it has a weaker second 2 in the date, the word trust is much clearer than IN GOD WE which is rather mushy, the L in Liberty is on the edge of the coin. All these are signs that point toward Die Variety #2.
Unlike Die variety #4, Lincoln's coat doesn't meet the edge of the coin. The words TRUST appear to be pretty uniform, unlike Die Variety #1 which has a stronger T.
The reverse doesn't have a die crack running through the O in One which is present in some of Die Variety #1. The Reverse has a much stronger strike than the obverse.
The lines in the wheat are visible unlike Die Variety #1. None of the words on the Reverse are somewhat mushy like die variety #3. To me everything looks ok, buy I would like to see more of a consensus on this coin.
Today I went to a coin show so I decided to bring it along and get the opinion from a few dealers. I showed it to 3 dealers, all of whom I purchased other coins from. I feel more comfortable showing a coin to a dealer I already did business with. Also a side note, the coin was in a capital plastics holder while all 3 dealers looked at it, not one removed it.
The first dealer looked at the obverse only and said it had a visible mint mark. Personally I didn't see any. He then made me an offer to buy it. This turned me off so I went to another dealer a few rows down.
The second dealer took about a minute to decide that it was indeed a 1922 no D. I figured I would increase my odds and get a third opinion so I can eliminate any doubt I may have.
The third dealer looked at both the obverse and reverse and came to the conclusion that he couldn't tell if it was a no D.
So the next place I decided get opinions from was the CCF. Here are two pictures of both the obverse and the reverse.
Thank you for your help.
