Swiateck and Breen mention in their '81 commemorative book that 1,500 Hawaiian coins were split up and stored in two banks in Hawaii immediately upon release. Any word whether this accumulation was ever split up and sold? Or are there 1,500 un-looked at coins still sitting in vaults?

From my reading on the topic over the years, that 1,500 figure was never confirmed; I've also seen lower estimates.

The Bank of Hawaii did consign 137 examples to Bowers and Merena back in 1986 for auction - all but two were listed as mint state.. It could be that 137 is the extent of the BOH "hoard."

Pretty interesting to hear. Also, this site said there were 50 proofs made. Do any exist?

cc-

Interesting thread. I am really not a commemorative collector, however, I live in the city in which Mr. Swiatek is based. I've met him casually seems nice enough. He would probably give his opinion on your question if asked.

His email...

Awesome! Thanks for asking. I can't wait to find out. I bet they would be very very expensive though. Probably a high 5 figure or a low 6 figure coin?
