I just purchased a Trade dollar in VF-30. Before buying the coin I noticed in the sellers picture, four small black dots on the reverse side of the coin, all near the rim. They don't detract much, and the price was good so I bought the coin anyway. I gave the coin an acetone bath thinking they might be PVC, but it had no affect whatsoever. That's about as far as I will go in cleaning a coin so I guess I will have to live with it. Any ideas on what caused these spots or other suggestions? They do seem to be on the surface of the coin and don't look like corrision? The dealer claimed the coin was uncleaned and I see no evidence of past cleaning.

I've heard of carbon spots, but couldn't tell you what they look like on a coin per say. I will do some research and see what I can find. Someone will come along with ideas I'm sure, and potentially explain that they can't be carbon spotting...lolol

They're probably what's referred to as carbon spots, so-named because of the color. Although differing people will tell you they are due to planchet defects, moisture contamination, or atmospheric contamination, almost all agree that they're not actually carbon.

You'd have to do something you really don't want to do to that Dollar to make them go away.

If you can live with them, then fine. Their existence is an accepted part of numismatics, and do little harm to the coin's value, especially a Trade dollar.

What would we all do without SuperDave? Thanks, I am going to leave them alone.
