My coin dealer once told me that prisoners often make rings out of coins. Does anyone know how it's done?

I believe they use some sort of blunt object to hammer the sides. Eventually the sides begin to curl over the actual design of the coin.

its called spooning a coin. You take a spoon when you have allot of time on your hands and just wack the edge of the coin with the spoon over and over again, then once its the width they want they just drill out the center and make a ring out of it

Now I don't have any idea what the prisoners do with their coins today, but once upon a time this was a common practice by almost everyone who had a girl friend and little money to spend on rings. I might add that it was done with silver coins and not the modern clad coinage. Something tells me that those coins simply won't work nearly as well.

Saw a guy make a ring from a silver Quarter back in the 70s.Just like Bryan said lot of time with a small hammer, then buff it up. Like Dan said the clad coins dont work.Nice lookin silver band ring for 25 cents and lots of time.Stand coin on end and tap rim lightly,to hard and coin will bend. BIRD OUT

I have made a couple of these and am in the middle of making another,, its really not all that hard and they do look nice when completed,, as for comfort in wearing them you get used to it just like wearing glasses or anything else .

Do they actually let prisoners have money?

I think they would. If you have good behavior and request one.

of course prisoners have money, they usually keep it in an account for them but they can get a certain amount out when they want to buy stuff from the vending machines and stuff. I think the spoon would be a bigger problem than the money in prison

Bryan, true that.

Rick,
How do you keep the silver from bending? I try not to hit it too hard, but my quarter is starting to bend and twist like heck.
