I wanted to get a couple bocxes of halves from my bank yesterday and they told me that they never get them because they are not being made anymore. How could I go about getting them? Do I have to ask to talk to whoever is in charge of ordering coins? And ask them to order them for me? Do all banks use brinks? is that where they would come from? Thanks, I'm just quite confused.

Yeah, that's the issue I'm having. I did get a few rolls, but they were ones that a customer brought in.

Someone's misinformed as banks can order them, directly from the Fed if they have to. :-/

Try a different bank/credit union, probably one of the BIGGER ones; Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, etc...

I had no problem getting them (bags of halves) from my credit union. The only drawback was the $500 minimum order, that was before the kiddos came around and depleted my "slush fund".

I didn't think the Mint was stopping production... I just thought they were continuing to mint them in LOW numbers because they are not a popular coin.

It is possible that your particular bank branch doesn't order boxes because they don't have a need for them. If it is a big bank chain, you could call other branches, explain you are looking to withdraw a box of halves and see if they have a box in. You could also try switching bank chains and open a small savings account at a new bank (check first to see if they have boxes of halves). Last option is any bank COULD order a box for you, but if they normally don't do this on their own (as you mentioned they don't) there could be a fee involved.

Halves just don't circulate (unless you count dumping, which is artificial). I'm 50 and I just don't remember halves ever circulating much, like the Ike dollar, more of a novelty.

Why would they? Just so they can spend money so you can make money?

yea unfortunately alot of banks just do not want the hassle of bothering to order these so called special orders for what purpose does one need so many halves in the first place? thats how they feel about it anyway (then they hit with you the "FEE" or else we wont get them for you)
