One of the things that I love about counterfeit collecting is that since counterfeiters are learning as they go, it's a lot like genuine early coinage when there were so many varieties and errors to discover. This one I found especially amusing: http://fakes.numismetrica.com/2012/...1902cc-0001/Looks like the eagle just had a fine meal. :-)

When something like this is made I don't understand why. Is it the lack of research or like the 1804 dollar, and passing it off as a rarity?_

@Coindog - Aye a lot of times counterfeiters will make fantasy dates hoping that someone will chance that it's a true rarity and go for it. This was especially the case before the advent of the Internet, when looking such things up was much harder to do. Other times... well... they miss the mark completely: http://fakes.numismetrica.com/2012/...1-1963-0001/ (And I just obtained a 1963-(P), too, so this isn't a one-off fluke. :-) )

Just found a 1903-CC "Bloody Eagle" as well. Same reverse die, fantasy Carson City date. http://fakes.numismetrica.com/2012/...1903cc-0002/Kinda neat as I keep a 1903-CC [a CF-S$1-1903CC-0001 to be precise] in my pocket as my "lucky pocket piece." :-)

Thanks for posting the link! I really enjoyed and bookmarked it. A question though; what about putting a quick paragraph reminding people that there are some off metal modern strikes. So that they don't automatically think that for instance their 71D or 77D Silver halves are not counter fits?

@jmkendall - Once I get around to it, I'll have a number of quick-reference guides for different series that go over things like common, legitimate "irregularities."

Thanks Steve! I hope you don't think that was a complaint! It is pretty obvious you have your hands full with this project. And I applaud you for it.
