Oau Summit Conference, Accra 1965 Likely Commemorative

alganbagerap Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 2490 Posts	Posted 05/23/2012 06:28 am The Organisation of African Unity held an historic Summit Meeting in Ghana in 1965. A limited run of 2,000 gold two pounds coin, KM# X5, were issued to mark the occasion. I've found a cupro-nickel version that appears identical in design, but has no listing in SCWC. I'm guessing that it's purely a commemorative: The box is stamped: OAU SUMMIT CONFERENCE ACCRA 1965 and is identical in size and shape to Royal Mint boxes of the period. aiglet7 Pillar of the Community Canada 695 Posts	Posted 05/23/2012 2:42 pm I was living and working in Accra during the OAU conference in October 1965. It was an interesting time period - to say the least! The 2000 gold coins probably found their way to Kwame Nkrumah's friends and relatives. I doubt that the commemorative medal was ever seen by the Ghanaian people. If you don't mind me asking, where did you find it? Report this Post to the Staff

The gold Two Pound previously mentioned (X# 5), weighed .4711 oz, but there were also gold and silver versions of this crown size piece, which is X#2. The gold crown X# 4 weighs in at a very nice .8338 oz and was limited to 50 pieces. You can bet your life that there's one apple didn't fall too far from the tree. And if the silver crown is X# 3, I wonder what happened to X# 1? Report this Post to the Staff
