1912 was the only year there was a mintmark on the coin.......three coins that year: Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco. San Fran is a key date to the series.

And remember that there was no mint Marks on the 1913 V type or Liberty Head Nickel so if you have on, don't bother looking for the Mint Mark.

The mint had shipped ten pairs of 1913 V nickel dies to San Francisco before the word came down not to do anything on the five cent pieces until the new Indian head design was ready. The mint had to quickly order the dies returned and they arrive back at the Philadelphia mint during the last week of 1913.

1912D and 1912S are the only mintmarked V nickels with the S being one of the three key dates in the series and the D as a better-than-average issue.

An interesting bit about that famous Nickel so I printed it out.
