Hello, I inherited this coin from my Mothers personnel keepsakes, I have no idea how & when She acquired it. She passed away @ 93yrs and the coin may have been out of circulation for decades, ?

My concern here is can anyone tell me how the Mint produced the matte/satin finish on those examples. My coin does not have a bright sheen, rather a "toned down" appearance. I have been able to see matte finish samples on various websites, but the images are not resolved high enough to discern the actual matte surface. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jim Donohue

Hello John, Thanks for your response. I will try a high res. setting on my dig. camera.
However, lighting may not be adequate. ? Jim

The 1922P is the most common business strike Peace dollar with a mintage of over 50 million. There are ~10 matte proofs known so it would be virtually impossible for you to have one of those incredibly rare proof strikes.

I wouldn't say Virtually impossible, I would say incredibly unlikely though. However; SOMEONE has to have these, and they are not all accounted for.

Just to show my point I am a virtual nobody in the world of Comic Collectors. Yet I own one of eleven (11) known copies of Action 13; THE rarest comic in the Superman canon, so you just never know.....

@Jim_D - Aye first, welcome to the forum. :-) Second, high res pictures are a must for us to get an idea of what you have. If lighting is a problem, try it in strong daylight.

There are a few known counterfeits of 1922 Peace dollars that look matte simply because of the manufacturing process used to make them, but they're very obvious on sight to one who is familiar with them due to obvious defects. However, it could also be either a genuine 1922 that's been re-finished, or -- the least likely yet amazingly awesome scenario -- the real McCoy.

You never know until it's looked at. :-)

It's possible for it to not have a bright finish because it's toned (tarnished) or oxidized, or because it's circulated.

Hello, John1 requested a pix. This is the best I can do. A digital image on high setting, daylight.
Thank all of you for your opinions. As I stated earlier, this coin may have been out of
circulation for decades, no way for me to know now. I can't figure out how to attach an image
to this post, ? Jim
