it's been plated, possibly with chrome. It's a very simple process when done with the coin in a solution, and a battery to move the ions around.

As Peter says, it's definitely a genuine just dipped in something.

Yep, it's been plated. Go into just about any souvenir trap and you've got a good chance of finding plated pennies and halfpennies, turned into keyrings or spoons or two-up kits or whatever. I've seen them both gilt and chrome-plated.

I brought a "fantasy" Silvered 1930 Penny from a Downies auction a few years ago. Auction 305, lot 2104. Date altered of course, but whom ever did it did a great job. A nice coin. I think it cost $80 odd before comissions.

I've got a handful of date altered 1930's, just to see the different ways they look. It always baffles me as to how well they can alter these coins. I had to get one of the good chinese copies too. I think the cheap chinese copy cost about $10. There's a big difference as far as the lettering. It seems to be less distinct or less perfect. Sort of smoother.

Yeah,i found that out many years ago,the guy in Melbourne in the 1950's that was making 1923 halves had it down pat, shoebox's full of them but according to my Father the Police never released any details so I don't know if they were altered dates or he was using a die or cast.
